Virtual Bear Hug for your Team

Virtual Bear Hugs for Your Team

It’s Valentine’s Day—and while we can’t literally wrap our arms around our teams, we can still show them the heartfelt appreciation they deserve. A few of my CEO clients shared how they are sending "virtual bear hugs” to their teams:

• Highlight Character, Not Just Results: "I'm expanding recognition beyond hitting targets. I'm telling recent stories about a few remarkable individuals: one who has handled themselves remarkably under pressure, one who has shown compassion and support beyond expectations to a teammate who has unusual hardship, and one who exhibited great resilience when a big initiative didn't go as planned.

• Celebrate Tough Decisions: "Sometimes the biggest victories are invisible—like making a hard choice that protects team integrity, or stepping up to diffuse a challenge. Acknowledging these moments makes people feel truly seen. I'll recognize a team that recently made a courageous decision that involved putting ego aside for the good of the customer and long-term value to the business."

• Honor Personal Sacrifices: "While we value balance, there are times we have to burn the midnight oil to meet a tight deadline or juggle family commitments to make a client meeting. I am making sure to recognize their extra effort and commitment. I write personal handwritten notes as much as possible."

A culture of authentic appreciation can transform a team’s morale—especially during turbulent times. A personal note, a sincere thank-you, or acknowledging someone’s unique contributions goes far beyond a pat on the back. Let’s show our people just how much they matter, no matter where they’re logging in from.
